About

Telmisartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) primarily utilized in the management of essential hypertension and for cardiovascular risk reduction. It exerts its therapeutic effects by selectively blocking the binding of angiotensin II to the AT1 receptor, which is found in various tissues including vascular smooth muscle, adrenal glands, and kidneys. This blockade prevents the potent vasoconstrictive and aldosterone-secreting actions of angiotensin II, leading to vasodilation, a decrease in peripheral vascular resistance, and subsequent lowering of blood pressure. Its long plasma half-life supports once-daily dosing, contributing to patient adherence. Beyond blood pressure control, Telmisartan has demonstrated benefits in reducing the incidence of myocardial infarction, stroke, and cardiovascular death in high-risk patients, particularly those with a history of cardiovascular disease or type 2 diabetes with end-organ damage. It is a well-established agent in the treatment of hypertension, offering a favorable tolerability profile for many patients.
