About

Carvedilol is a unique non-selective beta-adrenergic blocker that also possesses alpha-1 adrenergic blocking activity, making it a versatile agent in cardiovascular medicine. It is primarily indicated for the management of essential hypertension, mild to severe chronic heart failure, and to improve left ventricular function following a myocardial infarction. Its dual mechanism of action provides both vasodilation through alpha-1 blockade, which reduces peripheral vascular resistance, and a reduction in heart rate and myocardial contractility through beta blockade. This combined pharmacological profile contributes significantly to its efficacy in lowering blood pressure, improving cardiac output, and reducing mortality rates in patients with heart failure. Carvedilol also exhibits antioxidant and anti-proliferative properties, which may offer additional cardioprotective benefits. The "OD" (once daily) formulation enhances patient adherence by simplifying the dosing regimen.

Uses

  • Treatment of essential hypertension.
  • Management of mild to severe chronic heart failure.
  • Improvement of left ventricular function post-myocardial infarction.
  • Angina pectoris (off-label, but beta-blockers are used).
