About

Losartan is a widely prescribed angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) primarily indicated for the effective management of essential hypertension and for reducing cardiovascular risk in specific patient populations. Its therapeutic action involves selectively blocking the binding of angiotensin II, a potent vasoconstrictor, to the AT1 receptor found in various tissues, including vascular smooth muscle and the adrenal glands. By preventing these effects, losartan induces vasodilation, lowers systemic blood pressure, and reduces aldosterone secretion, which in turn decreases sodium and water retention. A key advantage of losartan over ACE inhibitors is its mechanism of action, which does not involve the inhibition of bradykinin breakdown, thereby significantly reducing the incidence of the persistent dry cough commonly associated with ACE inhibitors. This makes it a valuable alternative for patients who cannot tolerate ACE inhibitors.

Uses

  • Treatment of essential hypertension
  • Reduction of stroke risk in hypertensive patients with left ventricular hypertrophy
  • Management of diabetic nephropathy in type 2 diabetes
  • Treatment of heart failure (off-label or specific indications)
