About

Emgrast 300mcg injection contains filgrastim as its active ingredient. It is a granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) and a type of white blood cell growth factor approved by the FDA. This medication is primarily used to lower the risk of febrile neutropenia—a condition involving fever or infection associated with a low white blood cell (WBC) count—in patients with non-myeloid cancers undergoing chemotherapy. It also helps shorten the duration of neutropenia (low WBC count) in these individuals.

Additionally, Emgrast 300mcg injection is used to increase WBC levels and reduce the length of fever in patients with acute myeloid leukemia, support recovery in those undergoing bone marrow transplants, and treat individuals with severe chronic neutropenia (a persistently low neutrophil count). It also plays a role in preparing the body for leukapheresis, a procedure that removes specific blood cells. Another important use is to enhance survival chances in people exposed to high levels of radiation, which can severely damage the bone marrow. Emgrast is also used in patients with advanced HIV infection to help reduce the risk of infection.

As a colony-stimulating factor, Emgrast 300mcg injection works by stimulating the body to produce more white blood cells. WBCs are essential for fighting infections, and their levels can drop significantly during chemotherapy. Low WBC counts weaken the immune system, making the body more vulnerable to infections.

Before starting this treatment, inform your physician if you have a history of liver disease, kidney issues, sickle cell anemia, or bone disorders. Common side effects may include fever, pain, rash, cough, shortness of breath, and nosebleeds.

Uses

  • To prevent infections after chemotherapy due to decreased white blood cells (neutropenia)
