About

EMPASHIELD M 25/1000 combines empagliflozin (an SGLT2 inhibitor) and metformin (a biguanide) to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Empagliflozin works by inhibiting the sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 in the kidneys, leading to increased glucose excretion in the urine and subsequently lowering blood glucose levels. It also offers significant cardiovascular and renal protective benefits, reducing the risk of cardiovascular death, hospitalization for heart failure, and progression of kidney disease. Metformin reduces hepatic glucose production, decreases intestinal glucose absorption, and improves insulin sensitivity by increasing peripheral glucose uptake and utilization. This dual-action medication provides comprehensive blood sugar management, addressing multiple pathways involved in glucose dysregulation. It is typically used as an adjunct to diet and exercise, either as initial therapy or in patients inadequately controlled on monotherapy or other antidiabetic agents.

  • Breastfeeding - Not recommended during breastfeeding as the components may pass into breast milk. Consult your doctor.
  • Liver - Use with caution in patients with liver conditions. Metformin is contraindicated in severe hepatic impairment due to increased risk of lactic acidosis.
  • Kidney - Dose adjustment is necessary for empagliflozin based on eGFR, and metformin is contraindicated in severe renal impairment. Regular kidney function monitoring is crucial.
  • Lung - No specific direct lung contraindication, but severe respiratory conditions may increase the risk of lactic acidosis with metformin.
