About

ETERNEX T is a combination medication used in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. It typically combines Metformin, a biguanide, with Teneligliptin, a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor. Metformin works primarily by decreasing hepatic glucose production, reducing intestinal absorption of glucose, and improving insulin sensitivity by increasing peripheral glucose uptake and utilization. Teneligliptin enhances the body's ability to lower blood glucose levels by increasing the levels of active incretin hormones, which stimulate insulin release and suppress glucagon secretion in a glucose-dependent manner. This dual action helps to achieve better glycemic control, particularly in patients whose blood sugar is not adequately controlled with a single agent or who are already on Metformin and require additional therapy. The synergistic effect of these two agents helps to reduce both fasting and post-meal blood glucose levels, contributing to a comprehensive approach to diabetes management.

Uses

  • Management of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
  • Improvement of glycemic control in adults.
  • Used as an adjunct to diet and exercise.
  • For patients inadequately controlled on Metformin alone.

Directions For Use

Take orally, usually once or twice daily, with meals to minimize gastrointestinal side effects, or as directed by your healthcare provider.

Benefits

  • Effective blood sugar reduction.
  • Improved insulin sensitivity.
  • Reduced hepatic glucose production.
  • Lowered HbA1c levels.
  • Potential for weight neutrality or modest weight loss.
  • Convenient combination therapy.

Side Effects

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Vomiting
  • Headache
  • Dizziness

Safety Measures

  • Alcohol - Avoid excessive alcohol intake as it can increase the risk of lactic acidosis, a rare but serious side effect, especially with Metformin. Alcohol can also lower blood sugar.
  • Pregnancy - Generally not recommended during pregnancy. Consult your doctor to discuss risks and benefits, and explore alternative treatments.
  • Breastfeeding - Metformin is excreted in breast milk; Teneligliptin's excretion is unknown. Consult your doctor to weigh potential risks to the infant against the benefits of treatment.
  • Liver - Use with caution in patients with liver impairment. Metformin is contraindicated in severe hepatic dysfunction due to increased risk of lactic acidosis.
  • Kidney - Dose adjustment is required for Metformin based on kidney function. Contraindicated in severe renal impairment due to increased risk of lactic acidosis.
  • Lung - Generally considered safe for use in patients with lung conditions. No specific contraindications related to pulmonary function.
