About
Glucobay M-50 contains Acarbose, an alpha-glucosidase inhibitor used to manage type 2 diabetes mellitus. Acarbose works by reversibly inhibiting alpha-glucosidase enzymes in the small intestine, which are responsible for breaking down complex carbohydrates into absorbable monosaccharides. By slowing down this digestion process, acarbose delays the absorption of glucose into the bloodstream, thereby reducing postprandial (after-meal) blood glucose spikes.
This medication is typically used as an adjunct to diet and exercise, either alone or in combination with other oral hypoglycemic agents or insulin. It is particularly effective in controlling postprandial hyperglycemia. Acarbose does not stimulate insulin secretion and therefore does not typically cause hypoglycemia when used as monotherapy. Regular monitoring of liver function is recommended, especially during the first year of treatment.
