About

Isotretinoin, the active ingredient in Isogen, is a retinoid, a derivative of vitamin A, primarily used for the treatment of severe nodular acne that has not responded to other therapies, including oral antibiotics. Its mechanism of action is multifaceted, involving a significant reduction in sebum production, inhibition of the growth of Propionibacterium acnes, reduction of inflammation, and normalization of follicular keratinization. These combined effects lead to a profound and often long-lasting remission of severe acne.

Due to its potent effects and significant side effect profile, particularly its severe teratogenicity, isotretinoin is typically reserved for severe cases and requires strict monitoring and adherence to risk management programs. It represents a highly effective treatment for recalcitrant acne, capable of clearing severe lesions and preventing scarring.

  • Breastfeeding - Breastfeeding is contraindicated during isotretinoin treatment and for a period after the last dose, as the drug is excreted into breast milk and can harm the infant.

  • Kidney - Use with caution in patients with renal impairment. Dose adjustments may be necessary, and renal function should be monitored.
  • Lung - No specific lung-related safety notes are typically highlighted for isotretinoin, but general health monitoring is always advised.
