About

Minoxidil 5mg, typically administered orally, is a potent direct-acting peripheral vasodilator primarily used for the treatment of severe, refractory hypertension that has not responded to other antihypertensive agents. It works by opening ATP-sensitive potassium channels in vascular smooth muscle cells, leading to hyperpolarization and relaxation of the smooth muscle, thereby reducing peripheral vascular resistance and blood pressure. Due to its potent vasodilatory effects, it often causes reflex tachycardia and fluid retention, necessitating co-administration with a beta-blocker and a diuretic. While topical minoxidil is widely known for hair growth, the oral formulation is reserved for specific hypertensive cases due to its systemic effects.

Uses

  • Treatment of severe, symptomatic hypertension.
  • Management of refractory hypertension unresponsive to other drugs.
  • Used in combination with a beta-blocker and a diuretic.
  • Rarely used for its off-label hair growth stimulating properties systemically.

Directions For Use

Take orally, usually once or twice daily, as prescribed by your doctor. It is often taken with other medications to manage side effects.
