About

MET XL AM 25/5 is a fixed-dose combination medication that synergistically combines two potent antihypertensive agents: metoprolol succinate extended-release and amlodipine besylate. Metoprolol, a cardioselective beta-1 adrenergic blocker, works by reducing heart rate and myocardial contractility, thereby decreasing cardiac output and lowering blood pressure. Amlodipine, a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker, exerts its effects by relaxing vascular smooth muscle, leading to peripheral vasodilation and a reduction in systemic vascular resistance. This dual mechanism of action provides comprehensive and robust control over hypertension and angina pectoris, addressing multiple physiological pathways involved in these conditions. The extended-release formulation of metoprolol ensures prolonged efficacy, allowing for convenient once-daily dosing. This combination is particularly beneficial for patients whose blood pressure or angina symptoms are not adequately controlled by monotherapy, offering enhanced therapeutic efficacy and improved patient compliance through a simplified medication regimen.

Uses

  • Treatment of essential hypertension.
  • Management of chronic stable angina.
  • Management of vasospastic angina (Prinzmetal's angina).
  • When monotherapy with either metoprolol or amlodipine is insufficient.

Directions For Use

Take one tablet orally once daily, preferably at the same time each day. It can be taken with or without food.

  • Provides effective dual-action blood pressure control.
  • Reduces the frequency and severity of angina attacks.
  • Offers sustained therapeutic effect with once-daily dosing.

Safety Measures

  • Alcohol - Avoid or limit alcohol consumption as it may enhance the hypotensive effects and increase the risk of dizziness.
  • Pregnancy - Use with caution; consult a doctor. Amlodipine is generally considered safer than some other CCBs, but beta-blockers require careful monitoring.
  • Breastfeeding - Both components are excreted in breast milk. Monitor the infant for adverse effects. Consult a healthcare professional.
  • Liver - Use with caution in patients with liver impairment, especially severe cases, as metabolism of both drugs may be affected, requiring dose adjustment.
  • Kidney - Generally safe in kidney disease, but caution is advised in severe impairment. No dose adjustment typically needed for mild to moderate.
  • Lung - Use with caution in patients with bronchospastic diseases like asthma, due to the metoprolol component, which may worsen respiratory symptoms.
