About
Olmesartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) primarily utilized in the comprehensive management of essential hypertension. Its mechanism of action involves selectively blocking the binding of angiotensin II to the AT1 receptor, which is found in various tissues, including vascular smooth muscle, the adrenal gland, and the kidneys. This blockade effectively prevents the potent vasoconstrictive and aldosterone-secreting effects of angiotensin II. Consequently, this leads to significant vasodilation, a reduction in systemic peripheral vascular resistance, and a sustained decrease in blood pressure. The antihypertensive effect of Olmesartan is typically dose-dependent, with noticeable reductions often observed within two weeks and maximal blood pressure lowering achieved after approximately four weeks of consistent therapy. It is generally well-tolerated and can be prescribed as monotherapy or in combination with other antihypertensive agents to achieve optimal blood pressure control. Olmesartan is particularly valuable for patients who experience an intolerable cough with ACE inhibitors, offering an effective alternative in such cases.
