About

Saxagliptin is an oral antidiabetic agent belonging to the dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor class. It works by inhibiting the enzyme DPP-4, which is responsible for the rapid degradation of incretin hormones, such as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP). By preventing the breakdown of these incretins, saxagliptin increases their levels, leading to enhanced glucose-dependent insulin secretion from pancreatic beta cells and reduced glucagon secretion from pancreatic alpha cells. This dual action helps to lower blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, particularly after meals.

It is used as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes. Saxagliptin offers the benefit of improving blood sugar control with a low risk of hypoglycemia when used as monotherapy or in combination with medications that do not typically cause hypoglycemia. It is a valuable option for patients seeking to manage their blood glucose effectively.

Uses

  • Improvement of glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
  • Used as monotherapy when metformin is inappropriate.
  • Used in combination with metformin, sulfonylureas, or thiazolidinediones.
  • Adjunct to diet and exercise for blood sugar management.

  • Liver - No dose adjustment is typically required for mild to moderate hepatic impairment. Use with caution in severe hepatic impairment.
  • Kidney - Dose adjustment is required for patients with moderate to severe renal impairment and end-stage renal disease.
  • Lung - Postmarketing reports of bullous pemphigoid have occurred with DPP-4 inhibitors. Monitor for skin lesions.
