About

Reclimet combines two distinct oral antidiabetic agents, Gliclazide and Metformin, to provide comprehensive glycemic control for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Gliclazide, a sulfonylurea, acts primarily by stimulating the pancreatic beta cells to release insulin, particularly in the presence of glucose. This mechanism helps to reduce post-prandial blood glucose levels. Metformin, a biguanide, works through multiple pathways; it significantly reduces hepatic glucose production, decreases intestinal absorption of glucose, and enhances insulin sensitivity in peripheral tissues, leading to improved glucose uptake and utilization.

This dual mechanism addresses different aspects of type 2 diabetes pathophysiology, making it effective when monotherapy with either agent is insufficient. The combination aims to achieve better glycemic targets, including reductions in both fasting and post-prandial blood sugar, thereby lowering HbA1c levels and reducing the risk of long-term diabetic complications. It is typically prescribed when diet, exercise, and single-agent therapy have not adequately controlled blood glucose.

Uses

  • Management of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
  • Improvement of glycemic control.
  • Reduction of fasting and post-prandial blood glucose levels.
  • When diet and exercise alone are not enough.

Directions For Use

Take as directed by your physician, usually with meals to minimize gastrointestinal side effects.

Benefits

  • Dual mechanism of action for comprehensive glucose control.
  • Reduces both fasting and post-meal blood sugar.
  • May help achieve target HbA1c levels.
  • Improved insulin sensitivity.
  • Potential for weight neutrality or modest weight loss (Metformin effect).
  • Convenient fixed-dose combination.

Side Effects

  • Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Vomiting
  • Metallic taste
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Skin rash
  • Lactic acidosis (rare, serious)
  • Vitamin B12 deficiency (long-term Metformin)
  • Weight gain (Gliclazide effect)

Safety Measures

  • Alcohol - Avoid excessive alcohol consumption as it can increase the risk of hypoglycemia and lactic acidosis.
  • Pregnancy - Generally not recommended during pregnancy; insulin is usually preferred. Consult a doctor.
  • Breastfeeding - Not recommended during breastfeeding as components may pass into breast milk. Consult a doctor.
  • Liver - Use with caution in patients with liver impairment; may increase risk of lactic acidosis and hypoglycemia.
  • Kidney - Contraindicated in severe renal impairment due to increased risk of lactic acidosis. Dose adjustment needed for moderate impairment.
  • Lung - Use with caution in severe respiratory conditions that may predispose to hypoxia and lactic acidosis.
