About

Erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs) like epoetin alfa are recombinant forms of human erythropoietin, a hormone naturally produced by the kidneys. Erythropoietin stimulates the bone marrow to produce red blood cells, thereby increasing hemoglobin levels and oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood. ESAs are used to treat anemia, particularly in patients with chronic kidney disease, cancer receiving chemotherapy, or those undergoing certain surgical procedures, to reduce the need for red blood cell transfusions. Their mechanism involves binding to erythropoietin receptors on erythroid progenitor cells, promoting their proliferation and differentiation. This targeted action helps to alleviate symptoms of anemia and improve patient quality of life by restoring adequate red blood cell counts.

Uses

  • Treatment of anemia in chronic kidney disease.
  • Anemia in cancer patients receiving chemotherapy.
  • Anemia in HIV-infected patients on zidovudine.
