About

Abiraterone acetate is an oral androgen biosynthesis inhibitor primarily used in the treatment of advanced prostate cancer. It functions by selectively and irreversibly inhibiting cytochrome P450 17α-hydroxylase/C17,20-lyase (CYP17), a key enzyme expressed in testicular, adrenal, and prostatic tumor tissues. This enzyme is essential for the biosynthesis of androgens, which are hormones that stimulate the growth of prostate cancer cells. By blocking CYP17, abiraterone significantly reduces the production of androgens throughout the body, thereby slowing the progression of hormone-sensitive and castration-resistant prostate cancer. It is typically prescribed in conjunction with a corticosteroid, such as prednisone, to mitigate potential side effects related to mineralocorticoid excess, ensuring a more tolerable and effective treatment regimen for patients battling this aggressive disease.

Uses

  • Treatment of metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC).
  • Treatment of metastatic high-risk castration-sensitive prostate cancer (mCSPC).
  • Used in men who have not received prior chemotherapy for mCRPC.
  • Used in men whose disease has progressed after prior chemotherapy.
