About
Losartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) primarily used in the management of hypertension. It works by selectively blocking the binding of angiotensin II to the AT1 receptor found in many tissues, including vascular smooth muscle and the adrenal glands. This blockade prevents the vasoconstrictive and aldosterone-secreting effects of angiotensin II, leading to a reduction in blood pressure. Beyond its antihypertensive effects, losartan is also indicated for reducing the risk of stroke in patients with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy, and for the treatment of diabetic nephropathy in type 2 diabetic patients with a history of hypertension. Its mechanism helps to relax blood vessels, allowing blood to flow more easily, and reduces the workload on the heart. It is often chosen for patients who cannot tolerate ACE inhibitors due to cough.

- Pregnancy - Losartan is contraindicated in pregnancy, especially during the second and third trimesters, due to potential fetal harm and death.
- Breastfeeding - It is generally not recommended during breastfeeding as it may pass into breast milk and affect the infant. Consult a doctor.
- Liver - Use with caution in patients with liver impairment, as dosage adjustments may be necessary.
- Kidney - Use with caution in patients with renal impairment; monitor kidney function closely, especially in those with severe renal artery stenosis.
- Lung - Generally safe for use in patients with lung conditions, as it is less likely to cause cough compared to ACE inhibitors.
