About
Eltromag 50mg Tablet is an anticoagulant medication classified as a thrombopoietin (TPO) receptor agonist, containing the active ingredient Eltrombopag. It is primarily used to treat low platelet counts in individuals with primary immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) or hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. ITP is an autoimmune disorder where the immune system attacks and destroys platelets—blood cells essential for clotting and maintaining the integrity of blood vessels. Low platelet levels can lead to excessive bruising and serious bleeding. Eltromag is also used in adults to manage severe aplastic anaemia, a condition where the bone marrow fails to produce sufficient new blood cells.
This medicine is not suitable for individuals with known hypersensitivity to eltrombopag or any of its components. Allergic reactions may range from mild to severe and can present as rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, or difficulty breathing. It is also contraindicated in patients with severe liver impairment or active liver disease, as it may cause hepatotoxicity, indicated by elevated liver enzymes and bilirubin levels. In such cases, using this medication may further compromise liver function, so careful medical supervision is essential.
Before starting treatment, your doctor may check your eyes for cataracts, especially if you do not undergo routine eye exams. You may also be evaluated for bleeding in or around the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye.
If you stop taking Eltromag 50mg, your platelet levels may drop again within a few days. Your doctor will monitor your platelet count regularly and may adjust the dosage to avoid a dangerously high count, which can increase the risk of blood clots. However, blood clots may still occur even with normal or low platelet levels.
To ensure proper absorption, avoid consuming dairy products or calcium-rich drinks when taking this medicine. Use effective contraception during treatment, and inform your doctor immediately if you become pregnant.
Eltromag 50mg is not recommended for children under 1 year of age with ITP and should not be used in patients under 18 years old with low platelet counts caused by hepatitis C or aplastic anaemia. Inform your doctor about all medications, supplements, and vitamins you are currently taking, including those obtained without a prescription.
