About

Emtricitabine is a potent nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) widely used in the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. As a prodrug, it undergoes intracellular phosphorylation to its active 5'-triphosphate form, emtricitabine triphosphate. This active metabolite then competitively inhibits the activity of HIV-1 reverse transcriptase, an enzyme crucial for viral replication, by competing with the natural substrate deoxycytidine-5'-triphosphate. Furthermore, emtricitabine triphosphate is incorporated into nascent viral DNA, leading to premature chain termination and thus preventing further viral DNA synthesis. Emtricitabine is a cornerstone of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) and is typically used in combination with other antiretroviral agents to effectively reduce viral load, increase CD4+ cell counts, and improve immune function in HIV-infected individuals, thereby slowing disease progression.
