About

MERROBE 500MG contains Meropenem, a broad-spectrum carbapenem antibiotic. It is a bactericidal agent that works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. Meropenem achieves this by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) within the bacterial cell, which are essential for the synthesis of peptidoglycan, a crucial component of the bacterial cell wall. This interference leads to the disruption of the cell wall, resulting in cell lysis and bacterial death. Meropenem is highly effective against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including many anaerobic species, and is stable against hydrolysis by most beta-lactamases, including extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs).

Due to its potent and broad-spectrum activity, Meropenem is typically reserved for the treatment of serious and life-threatening bacterial infections, particularly those caused by multi-drug resistant organisms or in immunocompromised patients. It penetrates well into various body tissues and fluids, including the cerebrospinal fluid, making it suitable for infections like bacterial meningitis. Administration is typically intravenous, and dosage is carefully adjusted based on the infection type, severity, and patient's renal function.

Uses

  • Complicated intra-abdominal infections
  • Complicated skin and skin structure infections
  • Bacterial meningitis
  • Hospital-acquired pneumonia
  • Febrile neutropenia

Directions For Use

Administered intravenously by a healthcare professional. Dosage and duration depend on the infection severity, patient's condition, and renal function.

Safety Measures

  • Alcohol - Generally safe, but it is advisable to avoid excessive alcohol consumption during antibiotic treatment to support overall recovery and minimize potential gastrointestinal upset.
  • Pregnancy - Use with caution during pregnancy; generally considered safe when clearly needed. Consult a physician to weigh the benefits against potential risks.
  • Breastfeeding - Excreted in breast milk in small amounts. Generally considered safe, but monitor the infant for potential side effects like diarrhea or candidiasis.
  • Liver - Use with caution in patients with severe hepatic impairment. Monitor liver function tests during treatment.
  • Kidney - Dose adjustment is required for patients with moderate to severe renal impairment to prevent drug accumulation and reduce the risk of seizures.
  • Lung - Used to treat severe lung infections like hospital-acquired pneumonia. Monitor for superinfections, including fungal infections, during prolonged treatment.
