About
Mycept S (mycophenolate sodium) is an immunosuppressant medication primarily used to prevent organ rejection in patients who have received kidney, heart, or liver transplants. It is an enteric-coated salt of mycophenolic acid, acting as a prodrug that is converted to its active form, mycophenolic acid (MPA), in the body. MPA selectively inhibits inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase (IMPDH), an enzyme critical for the de novo synthesis of guanosine nucleotides. This inhibition leads to a profound suppression of T and B lymphocyte proliferation, which are key immune cells responsible for mediating the rejection of transplanted organs. The enteric coating helps reduce gastrointestinal side effects, enhancing patient comfort and compliance with the prescribed regimen, making it a valuable option in long-term immunosuppressive therapy.
Uses

- Breastfeeding - Not recommended during breastfeeding as mycophenolic acid can pass into breast milk and potentially harm the infant.
- Liver - Use with caution in patients with severe liver impairment; dose adjustments may be necessary, and liver function should be monitored.
- Kidney - Use with caution in patients with severe kidney impairment; dose adjustments may be necessary, and kidney function should be monitored.
