About

Myfortic (mycophenolic acid, enteric-coated) is an immunosuppressant medication primarily used to prevent organ rejection in patients who have received kidney, heart, or liver transplants. It is the active metabolite of mycophenolate mofetil, directly inhibiting inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase (IMPDH), an enzyme crucial for the de novo synthesis of guanosine nucleotides. This action effectively suppresses the proliferation of T and B lymphocytes, which are key components of the immune system responsible for mediating transplant rejection. The enteric coating helps reduce gastrointestinal side effects often associated with immediate-release formulations, improving patient tolerability and adherence to long-term therapy. Myfortic is a vital component of immunosuppressive regimens, working to maintain the delicate balance required to prevent the body from attacking the new organ while minimizing overall immune suppression.
