About

Telmisartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) that works by selectively blocking the binding of angiotensin II to its AT1 receptors in various tissues, including vascular smooth muscle. This action leads to vasodilation, reduced aldosterone secretion, and decreased blood pressure. Hydrochlorothiazide, a thiazide diuretic, acts on the distal convoluted tubule of the kidney to inhibit sodium and chloride reabsorption, leading to increased excretion of sodium, chloride, and water.

This reduction in fluid volume further contributes to blood pressure lowering. The combination of telmisartan and hydrochlorothiazide provides a synergistic antihypertensive effect, making it particularly effective for patients whose blood pressure is not adequately controlled by monotherapy. This dual mechanism helps to achieve better blood pressure control and reduce the risk of cardiovascular complications such as stroke, heart attack, and kidney disease. Regular monitoring of blood pressure and electrolytes is essential during treatment.

Uses

  • Treatment of essential hypertension.
  • Management of high blood pressure when monotherapy is insufficient.
  • Reduction of cardiovascular risk in hypertensive patients.
  • Prevention of stroke and heart attack in high-risk individuals.
