About

Empagliflozin is a sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor, a class of medication used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus. It works by blocking the reabsorption of glucose in the kidneys, leading to increased glucose excretion in the urine. This mechanism lowers blood glucose levels independently of insulin secretion or sensitivity. Beyond its glucose-lowering effects, empagliflozin has demonstrated significant cardiovascular and renal benefits, including a reduction in the risk of cardiovascular death, heart failure hospitalization, and progression of kidney disease in patients with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease or chronic kidney disease. It represents a crucial therapeutic option for comprehensive diabetes management.

Uses

  • Management of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
  • To reduce the risk of cardiovascular death in adults with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease.
  • To reduce the risk of hospitalization for heart failure in adults with type 2 diabetes.
  • To reduce the risk of kidney disease progression in adults with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease.

  • Pregnancy - Not recommended during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy due to potential adverse effects on fetal kidney development. Consult your doctor.
  • Breastfeeding - It is unknown if empagliflozin is excreted in human milk. Due to potential risks to the infant, breastfeeding is not recommended while taking this medication.
  • Liver - No dose adjustment is typically required for mild to moderate hepatic impairment. Use with caution in severe hepatic impairment as experience is limited.
  • Kidney - Not recommended for initiation in patients with eGFR <30 mL/min/1.73m². Dose adjustment may be needed based on renal function. Monitor kidney function regularly.
  • Lung - No specific contraindications related to lung conditions. However, conditions predisposing to dehydration should be managed carefully to avoid acute kidney injury.
