About
Telmisartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) primarily used for the treatment of hypertension and the reduction of cardiovascular risk. It works by selectively blocking the AT1 receptor, preventing angiotensin II from binding and exerting its vasoconstrictive and aldosterone-stimulating effects. This leads to vasodilation, decreased peripheral vascular resistance, and a reduction in blood pressure. Unlike ACE inhibitors, ARBs do not inhibit the breakdown of bradykinin, which means they are less likely to cause the persistent dry cough often associated with ACE inhibitors.
Telmisartan also exhibits a long duration of action, allowing for once-daily dosing, which can improve patient adherence. Beyond blood pressure control, it has demonstrated benefits in reducing the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and cardiovascular death in high-risk patients, making it a valuable therapeutic option in comprehensive cardiovascular management.
