About
VILMAX M 1000 is a combination medication containing Vildagliptin and Metformin, prescribed for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults. Vildagliptin, a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor, works by enhancing the body's natural ability to control blood glucose levels. It achieves this by increasing the levels of active incretin hormones (GLP-1 and GIP), which stimulate insulin release from the pancreas in a glucose-dependent manner and suppress glucagon secretion from the alpha cells.
Metformin, a biguanide, complements this action by primarily reducing hepatic glucose production and improving insulin sensitivity in peripheral tissues, allowing the body's cells to utilize glucose more effectively. This dual mechanism of action provides comprehensive and effective glycemic control, helping to lower HbA1c levels and manage post-meal blood sugar spikes, particularly when diet and exercise alone, or monotherapy with either agent, are insufficient.
Uses
- Treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus
- Improvement of glycemic control
- Enhancement of insulin sensitivity
- Reduction of hepatic glucose production
Directions For Use
Take orally twice daily with meals to minimize gastrointestinal side effects. Swallow tablets whole with water.
Benefits
- Dual mechanism for effective blood sugar control
- Reduces HbA1c levels significantly
- Low risk of hypoglycemia (when not combined with sulfonylureas/insulin)
- Improves both fasting and post-meal glucose levels
- May lead to modest weight loss or be weight neutral
- Enhances the body's natural insulin response
Side Effects
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
- Abdominal pain
- Vomiting
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Nasopharyngitis
- Tremor

Safety Measures
- Alcohol - Avoid excessive alcohol intake due to an increased risk of lactic acidosis, a rare but serious side effect of Metformin.
- Pregnancy - Generally not recommended during pregnancy. Consult your doctor for appropriate diabetes management during this period.
- Breastfeeding - Not recommended as Metformin passes into breast milk. Discuss safer alternatives with your healthcare provider.
- Liver - Contraindicated in severe hepatic impairment due to the increased risk of lactic acidosis associated with Metformin.
- Kidney - Contraindicated in severe renal impairment (eGFR <30 mL/min/1.73m²) due to the risk of Metformin accumulation and lactic acidosis.
- Lung - Generally safe for patients with lung conditions; no specific lung-related contraindications are known.
