About

Zita Met Tablets combine two active ingredients, sitagliptin and metformin, to provide comprehensive glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Sitagliptin is a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor that works by increasing the levels of incretin hormones, which in turn stimulate insulin release from the pancreas and reduce glucagon secretion, particularly in a glucose-dependent manner. Metformin, a biguanide, primarily acts by decreasing hepatic glucose production, reducing intestinal glucose absorption, and improving insulin sensitivity by enhancing peripheral glucose uptake and utilization. This dual mechanism of action addresses multiple pathophysiological defects in type 2 diabetes, leading to significant reductions in fasting and postprandial blood glucose levels and improved HbA1c. The combination is often prescribed when diet, exercise, and monotherapy with either agent are insufficient to achieve adequate glycemic targets.

Uses

  • Management of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults.
  • As an adjunct to diet and exercise.
  • To improve glycemic control.
  • When monotherapy with sitagliptin or metformin is inadequate.

Take orally with meals to minimize gastrointestinal discomfort. Adhere strictly to the dosage and schedule prescribed by your healthcare provider.

Benefits

  • Effectively lowers blood glucose levels.
  • Reduces HbA1c significantly.
  • Improves insulin sensitivity.
  • Low risk of hypoglycemia when used alone.
  • Convenient fixed-dose combination.
  • Supports weight management (due to metformin).

Side Effects

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Headache
  • Upper respiratory tract infection
  • Nasopharyngitis

  • Vitamin B12 deficiency (long-term use)

Safety Measures

  • Alcohol - Excessive alcohol intake should be avoided as it can increase the risk of lactic acidosis, a rare but serious side effect, especially with the metformin component.
  • Pregnancy - Generally not recommended during pregnancy. Consult your doctor to weigh the potential risks and benefits.
  • Breastfeeding - Not advised during breastfeeding as the active ingredients may pass into breast milk and affect the infant.
  • Liver - Use with caution in patients with mild to moderate liver impairment. Metformin is contraindicated in severe hepatic dysfunction due to increased risk of lactic acidosis.
  • Kidney - Dose adjustment is necessary in patients with renal impairment. Metformin is contraindicated in severe renal dysfunction.
  • Lung - Use with caution in severe acute or chronic lung conditions, as these may predispose to lactic acidosis.
