About

Eltrombopag is a thrombopoietin receptor agonist that stimulates the proliferation and differentiation of megakaryocytes, leading to an increase in platelet production. It is orally active and mimics the effects of endogenous thrombopoietin, a hormone that regulates platelet production. This mechanism helps to elevate and maintain platelet counts in patients with chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) who have had an insufficient response to other treatments, or in those with severe aplastic anemia (SAA) who are refractory to immunosuppressive therapy. The drug binds to the thrombopoietin receptor on megakaryocytes, initiating intracellular signaling pathways that promote the growth and maturation of platelet precursor cells in the bone marrow.

Uses

  • Treatment of chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP).
  • Management of severe aplastic anemia (SAA).
  • Treatment of thrombocytopenia in patients with chronic hepatitis C.
  • Prevention of bleeding episodes due to low platelet counts.
