About
Etanercept is a dimeric fusion protein, engineered to act as a potent tumor necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitor. It comprises the extracellular ligand-binding portion of the human 75-kilodalton (p75) TNF receptor fused to the Fc portion of human IgG1. This unique structure allows etanercept to bind specifically to TNF-alpha, a key pro-inflammatory cytokine, thereby blocking its interaction with cell surface TNF receptors. TNF-alpha plays a critical role in normal inflammatory and immune responses, but its elevated levels are implicated in the pathogenesis of various autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. By effectively neutralizing TNF-alpha, etanercept significantly reduces inflammation, alleviates symptoms, and slows the progression of joint damage and other manifestations across these chronic inflammatory conditions, offering substantial therapeutic benefits.
