About

Fenofibrate is a fibric acid derivative that acts as a peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα) agonist. Activation of PPARα leads to increased lipolysis and elimination of triglyceride-rich particles from plasma by activating lipoprotein lipase and reducing the production of apolipoprotein C-III, an inhibitor of lipoprotein lipase. This results in a significant reduction in plasma triglycerides and a moderate increase in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C).

Additionally, fenofibrate can lower low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and total cholesterol, particularly in patients with elevated baseline levels. Its primary role is in managing severe hypertriglyceridemia to reduce the risk of pancreatitis and in treating mixed dyslipidemia, where it helps to improve the overall lipid profile and potentially reduce cardiovascular risk.
