About

Eltrombopag is a thrombopoietin receptor agonist (TPO-RA) that stimulates the proliferation and differentiation of megakaryocytes, the precursor cells to platelets, in the bone marrow. By binding to and activating the thrombopoietin receptor (c-Mpl), eltrombopag mimics the action of endogenous thrombopoietin, leading to an increase in platelet production. This mechanism is crucial for patients suffering from conditions characterized by insufficient platelet counts, where the body's natural ability to produce platelets is compromised.

This medication is administered orally and is primarily used to treat chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) in patients who have had an insufficient response to other treatments, such as corticosteroids or immunoglobulins. It is also indicated for severe aplastic anemia (SAA) and chronic hepatitis C-associated thrombocytopenia. Eltrombopag helps to raise and maintain platelet counts above a critical threshold, thereby reducing the risk of bleeding events and improving the quality of life for affected individuals. Regular monitoring of platelet counts and liver function is essential during treatment.
