About
Telmisartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) widely prescribed for the management of essential hypertension and for the reduction of cardiovascular risk in adults aged 55 years or older with a history of coronary artery disease, stroke, peripheral arterial disease, or diabetes with end-organ damage. It functions by selectively blocking the AT1 receptor, thereby preventing the binding of angiotensin II and inhibiting its potent vasoconstrictive and aldosterone-secreting effects. This leads to effective vasodilation, a decrease in systemic peripheral vascular resistance, and a subsequent reduction in blood pressure. Telmisartan is notable for its long plasma half-life, which allows for convenient once-daily dosing, and its strong, sustained binding to the AT1 receptor, contributing to consistent blood pressure control. It serves as an excellent therapeutic option for patients who are intolerant to ACE inhibitors due to the common side effect of cough.
