About

Rituximab is a chimeric monoclonal antibody that specifically targets the CD20 protein, a transmembrane antigen found on the surface of pre-B and mature B lymphocytes. Its mechanism of action involves binding to CD20, which subsequently triggers a cascade of immune responses, including antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity (ADCC), complement-dependent cytotoxicity (CDC), and direct induction of apoptosis, leading to the depletion of CD20-positive B cells. This targeted B-cell depletion is crucial in managing various autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and certain vasculitides, where B cells contribute to inflammation and autoantibody production. Additionally, rituximab is highly effective in treating specific hematological malignancies, including non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and chronic lymphocytic leukemia, by eliminating cancerous B-cell populations. Its precise immunological targeting offers a significant therapeutic advantage, helping to reduce disease activity, induce remission, and improve long-term outcomes for patients with these complex conditions.
