About

Tenofovir Alafenamide (TAF) is a novel prodrug of tenofovir, a nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NtRTI), used for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) infection and chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. TAF delivers tenofovir more efficiently to target cells (lymphocytes and hepatocytes) at a lower dose compared to TDF, resulting in similar antiviral efficacy but with improved renal and bone safety profiles. It is typically used as part of a combination antiretroviral regimen for HIV or as a first-line treatment for chronic HBV, offering a valuable option for patients with pre-existing renal or bone concerns. Regular monitoring of viral load and liver function is important during therapy, alongside assessment for metabolic changes such as lipid elevations.

Uses

  • Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection.
  • Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) infection.
  • Part of combination antiretroviral therapy.
  • Patients with renal or bone concerns (compared to TDF).
