About

Flecainide is a Class IC antiarrhythmic agent used to treat various supraventricular and ventricular arrhythmias. It acts by blocking fast sodium channels in the myocardial cells, thereby slowing the conduction velocity in the atria, AV node, and ventricles. This action prolongs the PR interval and QRS duration on the electrocardiogram, helping to restore and maintain normal sinus rhythm.

Flecainide is primarily metabolized in the liver by cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) and excreted renally. Due to its proarrhythmic potential, particularly in patients with structural heart disease, its use is generally reserved for patients with life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias or symptomatic supraventricular arrhythmias without significant structural heart disease. Close cardiac monitoring is essential during initiation and dose adjustments.
