About

Varilrix is a live attenuated vaccine indicated for active immunization against varicella (chickenpox) in susceptible individuals. It contains live, attenuated varicella-zoster virus (Oka strain) and works by stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies and cellular immunity against the virus. This provides robust protection against subsequent infection with wild-type varicella virus, significantly reducing the incidence and severity of chickenpox, as well as the risk of complications such as secondary bacterial infections, pneumonia, and encephalitis. The vaccine is highly effective and plays a crucial role in public health strategies to control varicella outbreaks and protect vulnerable populations, contributing to a reduction in disease burden and associated healthcare costs. Its widespread use has dramatically altered the epidemiology of chickenpox.
