About

Midodrine is an alpha-1 adrenergic agonist that exerts its therapeutic effects by causing selective vasoconstriction of arterioles and venules, thereby increasing peripheral vascular resistance and blood pressure. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of symptomatic orthostatic hypotension, a debilitating condition characterized by a significant and often sudden drop in blood pressure upon standing, which can lead to symptoms such as dizziness, lightheadedness, blurred vision, and even syncope (fainting). By constricting blood vessels, Midodrine effectively counteracts the gravitational pooling of blood in the lower extremities, helping to maintain adequate cerebral perfusion and systemic blood pressure when a patient changes position from lying or sitting to standing. This action significantly alleviates the associated symptoms, improves the patient's ability to perform daily activities, and enhances overall functional capacity and quality of life for individuals suffering from chronic orthostatic hypotension.

Uses

  • Treatment of symptomatic orthostatic hypotension.
  • Management of neurogenic orthostatic hypotension.
  • Prevention of syncope associated with orthostatic blood pressure drops.
  • Improvement of standing blood pressure in hypotensive patients.
