About

Sitagliptin is an oral antidiabetic drug belonging to the dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor class, used for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. It works by enhancing the body's natural ability to lower high blood glucose levels. Sitagliptin increases the levels of incretin hormones, such as GLP-1 and GIP, which are released in response to meals. These hormones stimulate insulin synthesis and release from pancreatic beta cells in a glucose-dependent manner, meaning they primarily act when blood glucose is elevated, thereby reducing the risk of hypoglycemia.

Additionally, sitagliptin reduces glucagon secretion from pancreatic alpha cells, further contributing to improved glycemic control. This dual action helps to regulate blood sugar effectively. It is typically used as an adjunct to diet and exercise, either as monotherapy or in combination with other antidiabetic agents, to achieve better glycemic control in adult patients with type 2 diabetes.
