About

Zoryl M combines Glimepiride, a sulfonylurea, and Metformin, a biguanide, to provide comprehensive glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Glimepiride primarily acts by stimulating the beta cells of the pancreas to release insulin, thereby reducing blood glucose. Metformin, on the other hand, works through multiple mechanisms: it reduces hepatic glucose production, decreases intestinal glucose absorption, and improves insulin sensitivity in peripheral tissues. This dual mechanism of action effectively addresses multiple pathophysiological defects inherent in type 2 diabetes, leading to more robust and sustained blood sugar reduction compared to either agent used alone. It is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise when monotherapy with either glimepiride or metformin is insufficient to achieve desired glycemic targets. This combination therapy offers a synergistic approach to managing hyperglycemia.

Uses

  • Management of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
  • Improved glycemic control in adults.
  • Used when monotherapy is insufficient.
  • Reduces both fasting and post-prandial glucose levels.

Directions For Use

Take orally with meals, as prescribed by your doctor, usually once or twice daily to minimize gastrointestinal side effects.

Benefits

  • Dual mechanism of action for enhanced efficacy.
  • Significant reduction in blood sugar levels.
  • Improved insulin sensitivity in the body.
  • Potential for weight neutrality or modest weight loss.
  • Helps reduce the risk of long-term diabetes complications.
  • Convenient combination therapy in a single tablet.

Side Effects

  • Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal discomfort
  • Metallic taste in mouth
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Lactic acidosis (rare but serious, associated with metformin)
  • Vitamin B12 deficiency (with long-term metformin use)
  • Skin rash
  • Weight gain (less likely than with sulfonylurea alone)
  • Upper respiratory tract infection

Safety Measures

  • Alcohol - Avoid excessive alcohol consumption due to increased risk of lactic acidosis and hypoglycemia.
  • Pregnancy - Generally not recommended during pregnancy; consult a doctor for safer alternative treatments.
  • Breastfeeding - Not recommended during breastfeeding as components may pass into breast milk and affect the infant.
  • Liver - Contraindicated in severe liver impairment due to increased risk of lactic acidosis with metformin.
  • Kidney - Contraindicated in severe kidney impairment (eGFR <30 mL/min/1.73m²) due to risk of lactic acidosis.
  • Lung - Use with caution in severe respiratory conditions that may predispose to hypoxia and lactic acidosis.
