About

Fluconazole is a synthetic triazole antifungal agent widely used for treating a variety of fungal infections. Its mechanism of action involves the selective inhibition of fungal cytochrome P450 enzyme 14α-demethylase. This enzyme is critical for the biosynthesis of ergosterol, an essential component of the fungal cell membrane. By blocking ergosterol synthesis, fluconazole disrupts the structural integrity and functional permeability of the fungal cell membrane, ultimately leading to fungal cell death or inhibition of growth. It exhibits excellent activity against a broad spectrum of fungal pathogens, including various Candida species and Cryptococcus neoformans. Its favorable pharmacokinetic profile, including good oral bioavailability and penetration into most body fluids and tissues, makes it an effective option for both superficial and systemic fungal infections, including those affecting the central nervous system.
