About

Doxycycline is a broad-spectrum tetracycline antibiotic. It works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, thereby preventing bacterial growth and replication. This bacteriostatic action makes it effective against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as certain atypical organisms like Mycoplasma, Chlamydia, and Rickettsia. Administered intravenously, it achieves good tissue penetration, making it suitable for systemic infections. Its mechanism of action involves binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, blocking the attachment of aminoacyl-tRNA to the mRNA-ribosome complex.

Doxycycline is often chosen for its efficacy in treating various infections, including respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and certain sexually transmitted infections. It also possesses anti-inflammatory properties, which can be beneficial in conditions like rosacea. The intravenous formulation is particularly useful for patients unable to take oral medication or those with severe infections requiring rapid therapeutic levels.
