About
Filgrastim is a recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) that regulates the production and release of neutrophils from the bone marrow. It acts by binding to specific G-CSF receptors on hematopoietic stem cells and myeloid progenitor cells, stimulating their proliferation, differentiation, and functional activation. Clinically, filgrastim is used to reduce the incidence and duration of neutropenia, a condition characterized by abnormally low levels of neutrophils, which are crucial for fighting bacterial infections. This is particularly important in patients undergoing myelosuppressive chemotherapy, bone marrow transplantation, or those with severe chronic neutropenia. By increasing neutrophil counts, filgrastim helps to mitigate the risk of life-threatening infections and allows for the continuation of cancer treatments.
