About

Oxemia 50mg Tablet contains deferiprone, an oral iron chelator used to treat iron overload in patients with thalassemia syndromes and other chronic anemias requiring regular blood transfusions. Chronic blood transfusions lead to an accumulation of excess iron in the body, which can damage vital organs such as the heart, liver, and endocrine glands. Deferiprone works by binding to excess iron in the bloodstream and forming a stable complex that is then excreted from the body, primarily through the urine.

This chelation process helps to reduce iron deposits in tissues, preventing or mitigating organ damage and improving overall patient outcomes. Regular monitoring of iron levels and organ function, including complete blood counts, is essential during treatment to manage potential side effects like neutropenia and ensure optimal therapeutic efficacy.

Uses

  • Treatment of iron overload in thalassemia major.
  • Management of iron overload in other chronic anemias.
  • When deferoxamine therapy is contraindicated or inadequate.
  • To prevent organ damage from excess iron accumulation.

Directions For Use

Take the tablet orally, usually two to three times daily, as directed by your physician. It can be taken with or without food.

Benefits

  • Effectively reduces excess iron levels.
  • Oral formulation offers convenience over injections.
  • Helps prevent organ damage from iron overload.
  • Improves cardiac function in some patients.
  • Can be used in combination with other chelators.
  • Well-established safety profile with monitoring.

Side Effects

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

  • Neutropenia (low white blood cell count)
  • Agranulocytosis (severe neutropenia)

Safety Measures

  • Alcohol - Avoid excessive alcohol consumption as it can increase the risk of liver toxicity, which is a concern with iron overload and deferiprone.
  • Pregnancy - Contraindicated. Deferiprone can cause fetal harm. Effective contraception is required during treatment and for a period after.
  • Breastfeeding - Contraindicated. It is unknown if deferiprone is excreted in human milk; discontinue breastfeeding during treatment.
  • Liver - Use with caution. Monitor liver function tests regularly as deferiprone can cause elevated liver enzymes. Dose adjustment may be needed.
  • Kidney - Use with caution. Monitor kidney function regularly. Dose adjustment may be necessary in patients with severe renal impairment.
  • Lung - No specific precautions for lung conditions are typically associated with deferiprone.
