About

ZAVAMET 50/500 is a combination oral antidiabetic medication containing vildagliptin and metformin. Vildagliptin is a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor that works by increasing the levels of incretin hormones, which in turn enhance insulin secretion and suppress glucagon release in a glucose-dependent manner. Metformin, a biguanide, primarily reduces hepatic glucose production, decreases intestinal absorption of glucose, and improves insulin sensitivity by increasing peripheral glucose uptake and utilization. This dual mechanism of action provides comprehensive glycemic control for patients with type 2 diabetes.

This medication is designed to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus when diet and exercise alone are not sufficient. The combination therapy offers synergistic effects, addressing multiple pathophysiological defects of type 2 diabetes, leading to more effective and sustained reductions in HbA1c levels compared to monotherapy. It is an important tool in managing hyperglycemia and preventing long-term complications associated with diabetes.

Uses

  • Management of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
  • As an adjunct to diet and exercise.
  • When monotherapy with metformin or vildagliptin is insufficient.
  • To improve glycemic control in adults.

Directions For Use

  • Liver - Use with caution in patients with liver impairment. Metformin is contraindicated in severe hepatic dysfunction due to increased risk of lactic acidosis.
  • Kidney - Dose adjustment is required based on kidney function (eGFR). Contraindicated in severe renal impairment due to metformin accumulation.
  • Lung - Use with caution in patients with severe respiratory conditions that may predispose to hypoxia and increase the risk of lactic acidosis.
