About
Goserelin is a synthetic analogue of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), also known as luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH), formulated for controlled release. Its therapeutic action involves a dual effect on the pituitary gland. Initially, it stimulates the pituitary to release luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), which can cause a temporary increase in sex hormone levels (testosterone in men, estrogen in women). However, with continuous administration, goserelin induces desensitization and downregulation of the GnRH receptors in the pituitary. This sustained exposure leads to a profound and consistent suppression of LH and FSH secretion, effectively reducing sex hormone levels to castration levels. The 3.6mg formulation is a short-acting depot injection, administered every 28 days (4 weeks), ensuring continuous hormonal suppression. This makes it a critical therapeutic agent for managing hormone-dependent conditions, including advanced prostate cancer, hormone-receptor positive breast cancer in pre/perimenopausal women, endometriosis, and uterine fibroids, where reducing sex hormone levels is therapeutically beneficial.
