About

Ibandronate is a potent nitrogen-containing bisphosphonate that acts primarily on bone tissue to inhibit osteoclast-mediated bone resorption. It achieves this by binding to hydroxyapatite crystals in the bone matrix and being internalized by osteoclasts, where it interferes with the mevalonate pathway, leading to osteoclast dysfunction and apoptosis. This selective action helps to increase bone mineral density and significantly reduce the incidence of vertebral fractures in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis. Its long duration of action allows for convenient once-monthly oral administration, which enhances patient adherence and provides sustained therapeutic benefits. This mechanism helps to restore the balance between bone formation and resorption, crucial for maintaining skeletal integrity and preventing fragility fractures.

Uses

  • Treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis.
  • Prevention of vertebral fractures in postmenopausal women.
  • Increase bone mineral density in osteoporotic patients.
  • Management of bone metastases to reduce skeletal-related events (though 150mg is typically for osteoporosis).
